Reflections on the Day After the U.S. Elections

by Joanna Macy

Our commitment to nonviolence and justice needs to be stronger than our government’s commitment to military might and economic privilege. Those aims are deep-rooted in our country’s policies and history. Loosening the grip of those policies will require equally deep attitudinal changes.

It is precisely in this kind of change-work that Dharma teachings and practice can guide and sustain us. They can help us understand and deal with the fears that are so widespread in our country, and with the cravings and hatred arising from that fear.

The work we have done together in this election, as well as the skills and comrades we’ve acquired, will stand us in good stead now as we continue to lay the groundwork for a truly just and open society. We will move on, with the fearless and loving intelligence that arises from knowing our interdependence with all life.
