We will explore the connection between inner work and our work in the world, responding to our communities’ and world’s needs through service and activism, how to build a new culture of change, and how to meet the challenges of this young century with wisdom, compassion, and courage. Both of the facilitators have recently come out with a book exploring these issues, and the day will include perspectives from their diverse work and interchange between them.

Marisa Handler—activist, writer, speaker, and singer-songwriter—is the author of Loyal to the Sky: Notes from an Activist. Her journalism has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Earth Island Journal, Salon.com, Alternet, and Tikkun, Orion, and Bitch magazines. Booklist called Loyal to the Sky a “must-read,” and it is a finalist for Foreword magazine’s Book of the Year Award. Marisa speaks and sings about visionary social change all over the country. Donald Rothberg, a member of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council and the Executive Faculty at Saybrook Graduate School, writes and teaches classes, groups, and retreats on meditation, daily life practice, and socially engaged Buddhism. He directs “The Path of Engagement,” a two-year Spirit Rock training program connecting inner and outer transformation, and is the author of The Engaged Spiritual Life: A Buddhist Approach to Transforming Ourselves and the World.
