Bearing Witness
An Interfaith Retreat at Los Alamos and Upaya Zen Center
August 5 - 9, 2005
Led by Joan Halifax Roshi, Hilda Ryumon Gutiérrez Baldoquín, Maia Duerr, Constanze Frank, and others

This historic retreat is part of “National Days of Remembrance and Action,” a series of events in August 2005 across the U.S. to mark the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Retreat Schedule
Friday, August 5
Retreat begins at Upaya Zen Center. Retreatants will introduce themselves and articulate their intentions for participation in the program. The day includes information about the history of the atomic bomb, a review of nonviolent responsiveness, the tragic consequences in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the current activities of the Los Alamos National Lab, and the status of nuclear weapons research activities.

Sunday-Monday, August 7-8
Most participants will be in deep retreat with Joan Halifax Roshi at the Upaya Zen Center. Hilda Ryumon Gutiérrez Baldoquín will stay on at the Los Alamos site to bear witness through August 9. The two days at Upaya Zen Center will include talks that explore the history and consequences of the bombing, an interfaith religious service, meditation, and prayer.

Saturday, August 6
Early in the morning, the memorial day of the bombing of Hiroshima, participants will travel to Los Alamos National Laboratory to visit the Atomic Bomb Museum, and join others around historic Ashley Pond. The day includes meditation, prayer, study, making Jizos, and the taking of Vows.

Tuesday, August 9
Retreat returns to Los Alamos, marking the bombing of Nagasaki, and concludes as participants and leaders explore ways to foster a world without weapons.

Cost for full retreat, including food and lodging: Members of Upaya and BPF: $200; non-members: $250. Los Alamos days: donation. Dana. (deposit $100). People of Japanese ancestry are encouraged to participate. The Zen Center has limited accommodations. Reservations required; please inquire early.
