Turning Wheel, Summer/Fall 2008

Theme: Engaged Dharma Legacy and Future

Deadline for submitting articles for consideration: June 1, 2008

Publication date: September 1, 2008

Celebrating the Buddhist Peace Fellowship’s 30th year with this special anniversary issue, Turning Wheel, the Journal of Socially Engaged Buddhism, is looking for narratives that connect the personal and political on the topic of spiritual and social engagement. In this issue, we hope to explore the relationship between activism and spirituality as it relates to Socially Engaged Buddhism and why it is important for Buddhists to take action against social injustice and oppression.

Some questions we invite you to explore in your writing:

  • How has social engagement made a difference in the Buddhist community? In the world? In your organization’s work? In your own life?
  • How is the world different now than it was in 1978 (the year BPF was founded), and what new forms of engaged spiritual activism are being called for?
  • What are the growing edges of Socially Engaged Buddhism?
  • How do we build and vitalize a spiritual activist movement? What unique contributions does Buddhism make to this movement?
  • What would a dharma revolution look like today (In 1969, Gary Snyder first proposed the concept in his piece “Buddhism and the Coming Revolution”)?
  • What does Socially Engaged Buddhism mean to you personally? What inspires you to be engaged?

To submit: Send your submission by June 1, 2008. We prefer that you email your submission as a Word document to: turningwheel@bpf.org. Articles may also be mailed to:

Acceptable word count for articles is generally 800-2000 words. We are most interested in a writing style that is grounded in your personal experience. Our editorial bias is toward the experiential, and toward stories that exemplify how the personal is political and the political is personal. We also welcome submissions of artwork and poetry pertaining to the theme.
