BPF Letters to Governor Schwarzenegger
in Support of Clemency for Stanley "Tookie" Williams

December 8, 2005

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

We are writing to support you in granting Stanley Williams clemency and the opportunity to continue his transformative anti-violence and gang prevention work with youth. There is no other voice that has the impact and legitimacy of Stanley’s. Too many of our Black leaders have been murdered and their courageous voices abruptly silenced. Stanley’s life story and books spark something deep and hopeful in our youth. He gives us a roadmap to peace. We need him to help us transform our society.  We need him alive!

Please take a stand for redemption. Please take a stand for the future of our youth.

Sincerely,

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I’m writing to request that you not allow the execution of Stanley Williams to take place by granting him clemency. As a Buddhist I believe in the preciousness of all life and the basic human potential for transformation and redemption. Stanley’s impact as a peacemaker and voice of hope from death row is extraordinary. He can do what no other politician or religious figure can do: reach the youth.

Furthermore, Stanley’s case is riddled with racial bias and questionable forensic evidence.

I support you in taking a brave stand for life, hope and the future of our kids. Please save Tookie!

Sincerely,

Diana Lion
