Ways to Participate in BASE

In the San Francisco Bay Area

The Bay Area offers one to two BASE groups yearly in the Spring and/or Fall for those who are employed in social service or social change jobs, or for those doing from 5 to 30 hours of volunteer work. In the past participants who volunteer 30 hours a week in volunteer placements have been eligible to receive financial support and assistance with housing. Those who are working are asked to pay for the training on a sliding scale fee. All are encouraged to apply regardless of financial situation.

Recent programs have included:

• Youth BASE for activist youth ages 18-25, exploring the intersection of Buddhism, activism, and urban life.
• The Bay Area Prison BASE (BAP-BASE) began in January, 1999. All participants volunteered or worked in Bay Area jails, prisons, or prison reform organizations.
• BASE for Educators began in August, 1999. This program explored the intersection of education, action, and Buddhism.
• HOME BASE began in February, 2000, and focused on homelessness. Participants worked in direct service or advocacy for the homeless.

Programs in Other Locations

BASE programs have been formed in several geographical locations around the US. They individually manifest the philosophy and spirit of BASE. We support and encourage the formation of new BASE groups and offer a pdf version of our handbook on "How to Create a BASE Program" here (Part A and Part B).
