Retreat Description
BASE Camp is a socially engaged Buddhist education and training
retreat offered to those who want to be involved with socially
engaged Buddhist projects. It is a place where students, service
providers and progressive activists gather together to practice
various forms of Buddhist meditations in the morning and evening,
and learn to put these practices in action during afternoon
trainings or work projects.
The first retreat will be focused on practicing
Metta (Loving Friendship) meditation and studying nonviolent
communication and generous offerings toward service projects
on the retreat facility.
During the second retreat Vipassana (Insight)
meditation will be offered during the mornings and evenings
with afternoon trainings to understand social diversity, social
forms of suffering, and positive social change.
Teachers:
Tempel Smith has been practicing Insight
and Metta meditation since the 1989 including a year as a
fully ordained monk in Burma. He has been leading residential
youth retreats for many years at Insight
Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. He is currently

program at the Buddhist Peace
Fellowship, a member of the Spirit Rock Teen Council,
and teaches the teen
